Replacement Downstem Size Guide: Joint Size and Length
To choose a replacement downstem, check three things: the connection to your bong, the connection to your bowl, and the length measured the same way as the replacement listing. A matching colour or a familiar-looking shape does not confirm the fit.
The length check deserves particular attention. A listing that includes the ground joint in its measurement cannot be compared directly with one that measures only the tube below it. Here is how to collect the information you need before ordering.
First, check whether the downstem is removable
This guide covers removable glass downstems. A fixed downstem is built into the piece and is not a slide-out replacement part. If you cannot identify the design, look up the original model or ask for help before trying to remove anything. Do not force stuck glass or handle broken edges to take a measurement.
Match both connections
A downstem can have two different connection sizes: one where it fits into the bong and another where it receives the bowl. Check both, even if you are keeping your existing bowl.
A male glass joint fits inside a matching female joint. Size and joint type must work together. A number such as 14mm describes a connection size, not the diameter of the bowl's chamber or the length of the stem.
For example, Hoss Glass lists some of its water pipes with a 19mm downstem connection and a 14mm bowl. That is a reminder to read the complete specification: knowing that your bowl is 14mm does not tell you everything about the downstem you need.
Write the two connections separately in your notes: bong connection and bowl connection. If a listing shows two numbers without explaining which is which, ask before ordering.
Check what the stated length includes
There is more than one way to describe downstem length. These two measurements start at different points:

Measure an intact original and keep a record
If you have the original, intact removable part, place it next to a ruler on a stable surface. Take a clear photo that shows the measurement endpoints. Record the total length and the length below the ground joint separately, then label each number.
Keep the units consistent when comparing listings. One inch equals 25.4mm, but converting inches to millimetres does not resolve a difference in measurement method. Also record the original brand, model or part number if you have it.
If the old stem is missing or broken, start with the original order details or manufacturer's replacement specification. A photo of the bong alone may not establish an exact replacement length. Common downstem sizing questions
Can I choose a downstem from my bong's height?
Height alone is not enough information. Use the model's replacement specification or measurements of the original part. Two pieces with similar overall heights can have different joint positions and replacement requirements.
Why do listings use 18mm or 19mm?
You will encounter both labels in glassware catalogues. Check the maker's stated compatibility and your original specification rather than treating a label or a rough ruler reading as a fit guarantee.
Does a matching joint size guarantee a fit?
No. You still need the correct bowl connection and length. If the product description leaves a required dimension unclear, confirm it before placing the order.
